2Epikouros S.d. Epiteles aus dem Demos Rhamnous; die Pandionis
3hatte die zehnte Prytanie inne; im Mounichion am alten und neuen,
4dem ersten (Tag) der Prytanie; Volksversammlung; von den Vorsitzenden
5leitete die Abstimmung Nikoboulos S.d. Nikias aus dem Demos Phrearrioi
6und seine Mitvorsitzenden. Beschluss des Volkes; Stratokles S.d.
7Euthydemos aus dem Demos Diomeia stellte den Antrag: Da (schon) Philippides’
8Vorfahren stets sich als vortreffliche Männer
9für das Volk der Athener erwiesen und bei allen Gelegenheiten
10ihr Wohlwollen und ihren Ehrgeiz gezeigt haben;
11vielen und großen Nutzen dem Volk erwiesen
12haben; für Sonderumlagen und Trierarchien
13und Choregien und für andere Ehrenämter
14aus eigenen Mitteln viel Geld aufgewendet haben, wofür als Erinnerungsstücke
15in den Heiligtümern der Stadt die Dreifüße und die anderen
16Weihgeschenke geblieben sind; sie auch gut und ruhmvoll
17das Amt eines Strategen ausgeführt haben sowohl zu Land als auch zu
18Wasser; und da auch Philippides selbst so viel als möglich
19das ihm von den Vorfahren überkommene Wohlwollen
20gegenüber dem Volk und den Ehrgeiz stets
21gezeigt hat bei Sonderumlagen und Trierarchien
22und Choregien und bei den anderen Ehrenämtern
23und Engagements; er auch als
24gewählter General für die Flotte sein Amt
25in guter und dem Volk vorteilhafter Weise ausgeübt hat; er auch als Basileus
26alle Opfer, die er für die Stadt verpflichtet war,
27fromm und nach traditionellem Brauch geopfert hat; er auch
28für alles andere in seinem Amt, was die Gesetze
29ihm anordneten, gut und unbestechlich
30Sorge getragen hat; er auch als gewählter Festspielleiter
31alle Feste für die Götter gut und ehrgeizig veranstaltet hat;
32er auch für alle anderen Aufgaben, für die ihn
33das Volk oder der Rat wählte, in gerechter Weise
34Sorge getragen hat; er auch gute und dem Volk vorteilhafte
35Gesandschaften unternommen hat; und auch sich als Streiter
36für die Interessen seiner Heimat bei allen Gelegenheiten
37erwiesen hat, so wolle beschließen das Volk: dass man belobige
38Philippides S.d. Philomelos aus dem Demos Paiania wegen
39seiner Vorfahren [und seiner eigenen] Leistung und seines Ehrgeizes
40für das Volk, und ihn bekränze mit goldenem
41Kranz - - - und verkündige den Kranz
42an den Dionysien in der Stadt und den Demetrieia bei
43der Tragödien-Aufführung; dass für die Verkündigung
44der - - - Sorge trage; dass das Volk auch sein
45Standbild aus Bronze auf der Agora aufstelle; dass ihm und dem
46jeweils ältesten Nachkommen auch Speisung sein soll im
47Prytaneion, und ein Ehrensitz bei allen Festspielen, die die Stadt
48ausrichtet; dass der Schriftführer diesen Beschluss aufzeichne
49auf steinerne Stelen und aufstelle die eine auf der
50Akropolis, die andere neben der Statue; dass es Philippides
51erlaubt sei, auf die Stelen hinzuzuschreiben die Wohltaten
52und Sonderumlagen und Trierarchien und die
53anderen Ehrenämter, die von den Vorfahren und
54von ihm selbst geleistet wurden; dass die Kosten für die Anfertigung des
55Kranzes und des Standbildes und für die Aufzeichnung auf den
56Stelen der Finanzverwalter begleiche.

1In the archonship of Olympiodoros, when Epikouros
2son of Epiteles of Rhamnous was recorder, in the tenth
3prytany, of Pandionis, on the old and new day of Mounichion,
4the first of the prytany. Assembly. Of the presiding
5committee Nikoboulos son of Nikias of Phrearrhioi
6was putting to the vote and his fellow presiding committee members. The People decided. Stratokles
7son of Euthydemos of Diomeia proposed: since the ancestors
8of Philippides were ever good men to
9the Athenian People and at all opportunities
10proved their good will and love
11of honour, and they provided many and great services
12for the People, and they spent much money on the voluntary contributions
13and trierarchies and theatrical sponsorships and the other liturgies
14from their own resources, to which tripods and
15other dedications in the sanctuaries of the city still stand
16as memorials; and they performed many fine
17and glorious generalships both on land and sea;
18and Philippides himself, rating highly
19in his turn the duty arising from his ancestors’ service to
20the People, has ever proven his good will and love
21of honour in public subscriptions and
22trierarchies and theatrical sponsorships and all the other liturgies
23and honour-loving acts; and when he was elected
24general of the fleet he served
25well and in the interests of the People; and as king
26he has sacrificed all the sacrifices, as many as were his concern,
27on behalf of the city piously and according to ancestral custom;
28and all the other duties which the laws require of him
29in his office he has taken care of well and
30incorruptibly; and chosen as competition director he has put on
31all the competitions for the gods well and with love of honour,
32and all the other duties to which the
33People or the Council have elected him he has taken care of
34justly; and he has served on successful embassies in the
35interests of the People; and he has offered himself
36as a champion for the interests of the fatherland
37at every opportunity, the People shall decide: to praise
38Philippides son of Philomelos of Paiania both
39for his [ancestors' and his own?] excellence and love of honour
40towards the People, and to crown him with a gold crown
41- - -, and to announce the crown
42at the city Dionysia and the Demetrieia at the tragedy
43competition; and the competition director (or games directors) shall take care
44of the announcement; and the People shall stand a
45[bronze statue of him in the Agora]; and he and the eldest
46of his descendants at the time shall have dining rights in the city hall
47and a front row seat at all competitions which the city puts on;
48and the recorder shall inscribe this decree
49on stone stelai and stand one on the acropolis,
50the other next to his statue; and Philippides shall be permitted
51to inscribe in addition on the stelai the benefactions,
52[public subscriptions], trierarchies and the other
53liturgies performed by his ancestors
54and by himself; and the administrator shall allocate
55the expenditure for the making of the crown and the statue and
56the inscription of the stelai.
